#blogbookaday: Tricky

TrickySummary:  “The Duke and his dog, Tricky, spend their days making trouble. They cheat, steal, and play cruel-hearted pranks on their neighbors, just for fun. But one day, somebody new comes to town and gives Tricky a treat that melts his mischievous heart — and sets him thinking about the effect his actions have on others.
Inspired to change his ways, Tricky decides to set things right the only way he knows how… with tricks! Tricky’s ploy might just lead The Duke to reconsider his ways. Stylized cartoon-inspired art adds a distinctive mood and humor to this fun debut picture book about empathy, revenge, and reform.” (Taken from Goodreads)

Review: The Duke and Tricky play tricks all over town until one day, Tricky realizes that playing tricks is wrong and goes about trying to turn a new leaf. I enjoyed the film noir feel of this story and seeing the antics that the Duke and Tricky play throughout town. The illustrations have such a great flow to them and after reading more about the author/illustrator, I can see why. Kari Rust has a background in character animation which definitely shows through in this wonderful story about teaching an old dog new tricks.

Personal Reaction: I think my absolute favorite part of this story is how it’s laid – how the illustrations are sometimes framed and different sizes and how the words move the story along. The design of this book is definitely something to be admired. I was surprised at the story arc, but also found that it worked really well. Overall, this is a fun story about a sweet dog trying to right his wrongs the only way he knows.

#blogbookaday (1)This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
