This is the first time I’ve ever done a mock award program at the library. I had planned on doing this program in December but changed my plans last minute in favor of a dance party right before the holiday season. So, I’m back at my Mock Caldecott program for today with the following titles:

  • The Adventures of Beekle
  • Baby Bear
  • The Baby Tree
  • Bad Bye, Good Bye
  • Brimsby’s Hats
  • A Dance Like Starlight
  • Draw
  • Emily’s Blue Period
  • Eye to Eye
  • The Farmer and the Clown
  • Firefly July
  • Flashlight
  • Flora and the Penguin
  • Grandfather Gandhi18851166
  • Gravity
  • Have You Heard the Nesting Bird?
  • Here is the Baby
  • Hi, Koo!
  • Hug Machine
  • Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads
  • Maple
  • My Teacher is a Monster!
  • Nana in the City
  • Okay, Andy!
  • The Pilot and the Little Prince
  • The Promise
  • Quest
  • Remy and Lulu17471114
  • Sam & Dave Dig a Hole
  • The Scraps Book
  • Sparky!
  • Telephone
  • Three Bears in a Boat
  • Time for Bed, Fred
  • The Troublemaker
  • Viva Frida
  • Where’s Mommy?

I ended up with only about 14 kids (over 25 signed up!) between 1st – 4th grade.  At the beginning of the program I had about ten previous Caldecott winners on a table and asked what they all had in common (not all of ours have their medal on the cover!). After our discussion about the Caldecott Medal, I gave them a sheet of paper with all the titles listed next to 5 stars.  They were able to assign the number of stars to each book as they looked at it.

We all sat in a circle and every 35 – 45 seconds rotated our books around. It was so interesting to see how the kids voted, when we were all done, they created a certificate for the winning book and illustrator. Afterward, during our snack, we shared our winners, runner-ups and some books that we didn’t like at all. It was so interesting to see that some kids’ winning titles were some titles that other kids didn’t like at all!

The kids voted for the following:

  • The Adventures of Beekle
  • The Baby Tree
  • Flashlight
  • Flora and the Penguin
  • Sam & Dave Dig a Hole
  • Sparky!
  • Viva Frida

We’re excited to see what the next Caldecott winner is! Good luck to all the illustrators!
