Tween Program: DIY Spa Night

cucumbersWe were super busy last night in the library.  Each year we ask our middle school group (Jr. Friends) to help us film a commercial to promote the summer reading club.  Thankfully, our government access channel staff helps us with the filming and sound.  So, while 20 kids had to practice and film 20 different lines for our commercial, I provided the kids with a do-it-yourself spa and game night.  It was the perfect program to keep the kids busy while waiting for their turn to film.  And before you ask, yes we also had guys there too!

I bought the supplies to create a couple of recipes and the kids went to town.  We made lip gloss from Vaseline and Kool-Aid, a brown sugar vanilla body scrub, body glitter using aloe vera and fine glitter, and a couple of face masks, with cucumbers for the eyes of course!  I found a recipe that was called “Soothing Manly Mask” that combine cucumbers and plain yogurt together and a handful of boys actually tried it out!  I was really excited to see that they were interested – it didn’t smell or look girly which I think helped!  For the girls, I found an Soothing Oatmeal Mask and they went to town!  There was also nail painting and the girls had a great time doing their nails with neon colors and glitter nail polish.

After the spa recipes had been created and stored away in small containers – I used small Glad containers and containers for beads that I found at Michael’s.  The kids played card games – I brought a regular deck of cards and also brought a bunch of fun card games from home.  Overall, the kids were occupied for the 2 hours it took to film the commercial and I went home happy, but not very relaxed after a night of do-it-yourself spa recipes.  If you’re interested in my recipes, here’s the brochure that I created for the kids.
