Reboot

Reboot-HC-CoverI was scavenging for books late last week when I realized I had nothing to read for the weekend and came across Reboot on an end cap near the science fiction books.  Without giving it a second glance (except to check the publication date), I grabbed it off the shelf with plans of reading it over the weekend.  I was on the lookout for a few books that I could recommend to a 7th grade boy who goes through books faster than almost any other kid I know.  He’s usually pretty open to reading many different things, but really enjoys mysteries, science fiction, and no “girl” books.  Although I did point out that he really enjoyed The Hunger Games.  Anyway, I grabbed this book with a black cover and red font thinking that it very well could work for him – until I opened it up and realized the main character was in fact, a girl.  But, the story itself intrigued me enough to read and I’ll tell you – I’ll be definitely suggesting this for the young adults looking for something “like” The Hunger Games.

The story is set in the future where a virus has killed much of the population across America and cities are divided into the ricos section and the slums.  The story setting is actually in Texas, where Wren 178 decides to take an unlikely trainee Callum 22.  You see the virus that killed so many often will kill you, but your later come back to life; you reboot – the longer you’re dead the more “robotic” you are with less emotions, stronger, faster, and heal quickly.  This is definitely a new take on the zombie apocalypse that I have yet to see and I’m pretty excited for the sequel.  The story is full of action, suspense, and romance and I think there will definitely be some kids interested in this one!  A quick note about content: there is violence and talk of sex, so I would be hesitant to offer it to young middle schoolers.
