Blogging From A to Z April Challenge Survivor

For this year’s theme, I chose to look at leadership qualities as I’ve just recently (within the past 6 months) become the director of my public library. We have about 50 staff members, most of whom are part-time employees serving a 30,000 resident community by providing high-quality programs and resources. AtoZ Blogging Challenge – Zealous

2017atozDuring the month of April, I’ll be participating in the 2017 Blogging from A to Z Challenge. For this year’s theme, I chose to look at leadership qualities as I’ve just recently (within the past 6 months) become the director of my public library. We have about 50 staff members, most of whom are part-time employees serving a 30,000 resident community by providing high-quality programs and resources. Each day, I’ll look at one trait and how it’s helped me to become a better director.

I think zealous runs along side passion excitement, and energy – all traits that I think a good leader should have. I just had a meeting between our Library Board of Directors and our Township Board of Supervisors and one of the Supervisors mentioned that I didn’t hold back my passion for the library, which I’m really excited about. They noticed how excited I am about libraries, and our community library in particular and I showed them where we want to go in the future and that’s what I wanted to get across – that we won’t be extinct in a few years time – we might be evolving and updating ourselves to keep up with the technology and the times, but a library is still a vital component of a community.

And my hope is that I can provide the leadership needed to position our library into that role 0 as a third space where community members go to learn and engage with others, where there is a staff that is zealous about providing quality customer service to everyone who walks in the door. I’m excited about my role in this library and our path into the future!

AtoZ Blogging Challenge – Young-At-Heart

2017atozDuring the month of April, I’ll be participating in the 2017 Blogging from A to Z Challenge. For this year’s theme, I chose to look at leadership qualities as I’ve just recently (within the past 6 months) become the director of my public library. We have about 50 staff members, most of whom are part-time employees serving a 30,000 resident community by providing high-quality programs and resources. Each day, I’ll look at one trait and how it’s helped me to become a better director.

Another letter where it was difficult to find leadership traits, but I think young-at-heart can go together with eXcited from yesterday. I’m a young director, there’s no argument there. And most of my staff are between 10-60 years older than I am… that’s right – there is almost a 60 year age difference between myself and one of my employees. This means that in our workplace there are three different generations all working together, which is pretty cool!

I want to encourage my staff to be welcoming to even our youngest patrons – babies and toddlers who come into the library for storytime, to pick out books and to play with toys. I want our library to be safe, so I don’t mind when they ask the little ones to walk through the adult department, but I also want them to treat these little patrons as kindly as we do the adults in our library, because eventually they will become the adults in our library. I want our staff to be welcoming and comforting when needed so that kids know we care about them as individuals and I think part of that is being willing to remember what it was like to be a kid and a teenager – to be young-at-heart.

I don’t mind taking a little time out of my day to play with the kids in the children’s department, suggest a book or two to a tween and check in about how school’s going, and be more than excited when one of our “grown-up kids” (college kids) come back to visit. These connections create a strong community and that’s what we’re striving for – for everyone.

AtoZ Blogging Challenge – eXcited

2017atozDuring the month of April, I’ll be participating in the 2017 Blogging from A to Z Challenge. For this year’s theme, I chose to look at leadership qualities as I’ve just recently (within the past 6 months) become the director of my public library. We have about 50 staff members, most of whom are part-time employees serving a 30,000 resident community by providing high-quality programs and resources. Each day, I’ll look at one trait and how it’s helped me to become a better director.

I had to cheat today because there very few positive leadership qualities that start with X, so I subbed in eXcited (it almost counts). I’m not afraid to show my excitement at work for projects, activities, and even the mundane tasks. More and more I hear my staff members marveling at everything I’m willing to do – cover books, set up a new aquarium for our turtle, weed books, pack boxes – whatever it takes to keep the library moving. I think it’s important as a leader to be willing to roll up your sleeves and jump in where necessary. I’m still working on delegating, but I’ve got the teamwork aspect down. Sharing my passion and excitement encourages my staff to be excited about their work too and that excited can be seen by our patrons. Who doesn’t love seeing someone enjoy the work they do and take pride in it?

AtoZ Blogging Challenge – Willing

2017atozDuring the month of April, I’ll be participating in the 2017 Blogging from A to Z Challenge. For this year’s theme, I chose to look at leadership qualities as I’ve just recently (within the past 6 months) become the director of my public library. We have about 50 staff members, most of whom are part-time employees serving a 30,000 resident community by providing high-quality programs and resources. Each day, I’ll look at one trait and how it’s helped me to become a better director.

It’s important, at times, to be willing to make compromises as a leader. It’s not always easy to make these compromises, but sometimes compromises will get you further down the road. This isn’t always easy for me as I tend to make a decision and then expect results, but sometimes you have to work with other people to get the results you’re looking for and compromises have to be made. And as I’m finding, to be willing to work with organizations and groups of people, we often get positive results and are able to dream bigger by having others to work with. We recently built a new community center in our township, which is great for residents, but took some time for our Park and Recreation Department and the Library to figure out how to work together to provide classes together. We’re currently partnering once a month to offer a free fitness class to the community and just submitted a grant to provide a healthy living series of programs in the future. It hasn’t been easy, but by willing to make compromises on both sides of the table, we’re able to provide better services to our community and that’s what we both want.
