Storytime Theme: Exercise
While I wouldn’t necessarily say that kids need to “work out” I do think that encouraging kids to be active is a healthy choice! Kids lead very sedentary lives, especially when they reach school age, so encouraging healthy habits early is helpful. And kids can learn that exercise is a fun activity to do with friends and family! If you’re looking at ways to change your storytime, you can start with a storytime lesson plan like this one and then slowly offer to a Music & Movement program once in a while (maybe without any books at all) or a Yoga storytime that incorporates yoga poses during transitions between books!
Letting kids explore different types of movement is not only great for phsyical health, but for mental health as well as they learn to cross over their midline which allows both sides of your brain to communicate and work together. And as I mentioned before movement is healthy for everyone and can look different – going for a walk as a family after dinner, playing at the playground, doing a yoga session on Saturday morning, having a dance party in the afterrnoon, riding bikes to the park. This storytime lesson plan is just a fun way to get families moving that would be perfect for when it’s so cold outside and more difficult to get out and move!
