Storytime Theme: Letter I

This is the first letter that I’ve come across in the alphabet that actually took a little bit of time to find enough different types of books that use words that start with the letter I. I’d also say that I had to stretch a little with books like Bear Feels Sick (for illness) and Duck Skates (for ice skating). But, I found enough books for a complete list, and I sure you could find multiple books on topics like ice cream. I wanted to make sure I gave readers a wide variety of words to use for the letter I lesson plan.

What I love about lesson plans like this is that you can really focus on the letter I as a whole, but if you wanted to, you could also take inspiration from just one book and build an entire storytime or other program around that. For example, 88 Instruments would be a great introduction to an instrument petting zoo or a visit from a local band or orchestra.

If you live in an area that might not have an orchestra on hand, check out two different places – a local senior center, I know ours has a band and I think it would be a great multigenerational program to bring the seniors together with the toddlers or preschoolers. Or, ask the local music teacher at your high school if you could somehow have a field trip and bring some of the band members and their instruments to a program at the library or preschool.
