Blogging A to Z: Board Books
This is the perfect way to (almost) begin the alphabet because you begin reading aloud to your baby with board books! Board books are usually smaller than your typical picture book, made with heavy-duty cardboard pages, and are usually simplistic in plot. But don’t let the simplicity fool you. Although they may seem simplistic to you and me, babies are developing so many neurons and learning so many things, they are absolutely perfect for the youngest of readers.
If your little one is under six months old, look for high contrast images and simple text. You don’t really need to “read” the book. Talk to your baby about the pictures, expand beyond the story, and enjoy the snuggles! If your little one in under a year old, start looking for books with short phrases. You’ll notice little ones will start paying more attention to the books as they learn to grab hold of things and explore!
Board books are great for two and three year olds as well. They’re perfect for kids who love to see photographs of other kids, see routines they’re comfortable with, and explore new vocabulary and concepts. Look for longer board books with more detailed illustrations that hold your little one’s attention.
