Review:
I picked this title up at ALA and got the chance to meet Marilyn to sign the book. We briefly talked about the importance of exposing young children to poetry in a fun and interactive way. I think many people have an aversion to poetry because they remember their school days being required to memorized and recite poems or trying to figure out what poets of the 19th century meant.
Poetry for kids these days, think Shel Silverstein and later, are fun to read and not as inaccessible as you think. Take Float, Flutter for example – 24 rhyming words about all the different types of ways animals move around. What I love most is that although this book is a perfect introduction to reading, you can also expand the story even more by talking about the different animals, their habitats, what they eat, and more.
