Storytime Theme: Juneteenth
Celebrate Juneteenth this year with a special storytime program with age appropriate books for preschoolers and early elementary school age kids. I don’t think storytime necessarily needs to end when kids start school and this is a perfect example of a storytime that would work really well with an older audience that would understand some of the bigger concepts of Juneteenth. That being said, there are some really amazing picture books available that are also geared toward a younger audience that you’ll find in the list below.
Our school district recently started closing to celebrate both Diwali and Ramadan, we already cover most of the major Christian and Jewish holidays, and I thought that gave the library a perfect chance to offer programs about these holidays to teach kids about the cultures and religions that their neighbors and classmates might celebrate. The same can be done for Juneteenth and while the kids aren’t in school, a Juneteenth storytime during summer reading is a definite possibility. Check out the great books, as well as songs by icons of American music like Ella Jenkins (the First Lady of children’s music) and more recent additions like the Culture Queen!
