Storytime Theme: Mother’s Day
I know, I know, it’s only January, but over the next twelve months, I’m going to be sharing a lot of storytime posts about holidays and in order to make them useful to people, I want to make sure they’re available ahead of time! Celebrating holidays in storytime has been a contentious topic at times for a number of reasons, mainly ensuring that the holiday is appropriately celebrated and that the celebration doesn’t ostracize members of the community. And while I hear the argument, I also think it can be an important aspect of creating opportunities for learning for kids and grown-ups alike.
While Mother’s Day isn’t a religious holiday, it could be a difficult topic for some people all the same. Maybe a child’s mother has passed or isn’t a regular part of their life and celebrating Mother’s Day might be difficult for them. By posting the theme ahead of the program, families and caregivers can choose whether or not they are comfortable attending. I wouldn’t necessarily propose making every storytime you offer one about a holiday, but it might be nice to celebrate some holidays throughout the year, if it’s something your community is looking for.
Today’s storytime celebrates moms of all kinds – both human and animal alike! I tried to include a couple of new titles on the list that you might not have seen otherwise. But, you’ll find a few additional picture book titles on these book lists that aren’t the most recent, but are still great books to share with kids – 2019, 2020, and 2023.
