Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Confessions
Today’s theme started out as a little daunting to me, but after I gave it a few minutes to percolate, I really enjoyed this writing prompt and came up with some really great bookish confessions. So, learn a little bit about my own bookish confessions and maybe share one of your own in the comments!
Bookish Confessions
If I Bought a Book, It’s Probably Not Going to Be Read
I love the idea of having books, but I have this weird mental thing that basically is if I own it, I can read it whenever versus having a deadline with library books. So books often end up sitting on my shelf rather than getting read!
I Totally Judge Books by their Covers
I know the saying goes, “Never judge a book by it’s cover, but I definitely do. I’ve been surprised before by some covers (Greenglass House, I’m looking at you!), but I definitely will pick up books with a specific style!)
I Don’t Like the Smell of Old Books
I know that many people absolutely love the smell of old books – and maybe that works for really old books that you’ll find in an antique store. But, old books in my library too often smell like vomit and it’s obviously not pleasant and very off-putting.
I Rarely Remember Any Details from the Books I’ve Read
I love to read, but I can’t remember small details (or often big details) in the books I read. My partner on the other hand isn’t a big reader, but will remember every single detail!
I Don’t Use the Dozens of Bookmarks I Own, Rather I Use a Clean Tissue or Receipt
I’ve been gifted dozens of bookmarks and while they are lovely, I’m more likely to use a clean tissue or receipt lying around as a bookmark. I’m not sure why this is the case, but it’s what I do.
I’ll Not Read a Book for Fear of Not Loving It
I’ve put off reading specific titles because I’m afraid I’m not going to love it as much as I hope I will.
I Use to Always Finish a Book
When I was younger, I’d always finish the books I read, but as I’ve gotten older, my philosophy has changed and I don’t want to waste my time on a book I don’t like, so I’ll totally DNF (did not finish) it!
I’ve Returned Books Late to the Library
I have absolutely no excuse… I’m at the library at least five days a week and I’ve still returned books late! I don’t often fault people for returning items overdue. If I can’t remember and I’m there every day, I can’t always expect everyone else to get to the library as well.
I Don’t Like Receiving Books as Gifts
Receiving books as a gifts is a specific kind of pressure because the gift giver most often knows your a book lover and still gives you a book. Sometimes I’ll have already read it or owned it and other times they share a favorite of there’s which I know inherently, I’ll never enjoy.
I’ll Fangirl Harder Over Authors (and Book Celebrities) Than TV/Movie Stars Any Day
I was at the ALA conference a number of years ago, traveling on the bus from my hotel to the convention center and Jason Reynolds runs in front of the bus. I could easily pick him out of the crowd as one of my favorite authors. But, I could easily walk past some of the most famous actors and not even blink and eye.
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I just don’t buy books. Well, a few, but generally not. And I absolutely judge books by their cover as well.
Like how old for the book? I recently dragged out my husband’s family bible and it stank to high heaven. It was printed in 1882 and is entirely in German. I use it as a backdrop for my Amish book review pictures. So stinky!
Books are too personal, it’s very difficult for someone else to pick out what you might like so I get that.
Great list!

I strongly dislike the smell of old books, too. It’s one of the reasons why I only borrow ebooks from my library. 🙂

If I Bought a Book, It’s Probably Not Going to Be Read – I thought I was the only one who suffered from this! Ebooks – I will totally finish them, but paperback books that I buy – for some reason, they end up languishing on the shelf forever

Totally agree on the last one. Here is my post https://paigesofnovels.com/2024/10/08/top-ten-tuesday-bookish-accomplishments-and-confessions/.

Agree on the books as gifts thing. Unless I’ve specifically asked for it

I’m the same way with buying books. Since I can read them whenever I want, I just sort of forget about them and never actually read them. I also don’t like old book smell (or used bookstore/thrift store smell), but I LOVE new book smell! As for books as gifts, I only buy books if I know for sure it’s one the person wants. I also always include a gift receipt so they can return it if they want. Better yet, I give bookstore gift cards.
Happy TTT!

I feel your first two confessions hard! I buy books at the thrift store all the time, and then they just sit on my shelf until I decide I want to pick a book off my shelf to read (based on the cover of course), and they win the lottery like the little aliens in the claw machine in Toy Story. I don’t check out that many books from my library though, so I guess I probably do slightly better at reading the books I own than you (but that’s more to do with the fact that I end up having to buy most of my book club books because the wait at the library is too long).
I hope you have a great week.
