Storytime Theme: Blankets

Regardless of the season, you’ll most likely find me wrapped up in a blanket both at home and at work. Typically, the air conditioning is too cold and the heat isn’t warm enough, so I tend to keep a blanket handy. Now that the nights are beginning to cool down, I love sleeping with the windows open and burrowing underneath my covers to get nice and cozy.

This cozy little lesson plan for early literacy includes a great selection of picture book read alouds – some are perfect for a younger audience, while others would make great choices for an elementary school program. And what’s a blanket storytime without a blanket fort? You’ve got to have a blanket fort! In fact, if you haven’t offered a Family Fort Night at your library, you’re really missing out! It’s a super simple program and while this post is from (many) years ago, we just offered it as a program this summer and our families absolutely raved about it! So much so, that we’re offering it again this fall!

You could also pair this lesson plan with one for bedtime or nap time and make a larger program out of it as well. Or pick and choose what works best for you and your little readers. While I don’t have the staff and space to offer it regularly, we also offer a pajama storytime for working families in the evenings and this theme would fit right into the pajama-themed idea as well. However you decide to use this storytime theme: blankets, enjoy and make sure to bring your own special, snuggly blanket as a prop!
