Top Ten Tuesday: Things That Make Me Instantly NOT Want to Read a Book
I’m pretty open when it comes to reading books. I’ll try pretty much anything out there. And if someone suggests a book to me, I’ll read the book completely, no matter whether I love it or not. But, there are some things that make me instantly not want to read a book. All of these are just personal preferences, honestly, and some are easier to figure out before picking up a book to read, while others like poorly researched books are something you don’t often find out until you’re already reading.

Things That Make Me Instantly NOT Want to Read a Book
Poorly Researched Books
If you’re going to write a book set in the real world, please, please, please make sure you do the research! I once read a book as a family traveled through Pennsylvania and the landmarks and travel were all wrong. Real people, people who are going to read your book, live in Pennsylvania and will know that you didn’t take the time to consult a map.
Depressing Books
I read to be entertained and for stress relief. The last thing I want to read is a depressing story. I know they have their place, but they’re not for me! I don’t tend to read a lot of YA books because they are often very heavy and somewhat depressing.
“Ugly” Covers
I admit it, I will judge a book by its cover. I think I even mentioned the types of covers I go for when it comes to my contemporary romance – bright, bold backgrounds, with illustrated couples. I’m much more flexible in the children’s book world, but I’m a very visual person, so the cover has to grab my attention.
Horror
I’m an utter scaredy-cat! I have no interest in reading horror and that’s from someone who grew up with a father who has read every single Stephen King book out there. I just don’t like the horror genre all that much, so it’s not something I would pick up for myself.
Really Popular Books
I’m not a person who will read really popular titles that are on the NY Times Bestsellers list until forever from now. I have yet to read a Colleen Hoover book or Where the Crawdads Sing. The popularity doesn’t really do anything for me. It’s probably due to me having to wait for a library copy to be available and I just don’t want to wait on a holds list that long. I mean, I’m literally reading The Night Circus now after years of it being out and available to read.
