Storytime Theme: Mail Time!
I’m so surprised that I’ve never done a mail-themed storytime before! Who doesn’t love getting fun mail? Honestly, my reluctance probably stems from elementary school. For a few years, we’d spend the early part of February learning about the postal service system. We took a field trip to the post office and even created our own post office in our library. We had to write out addresses for all of our Valentine’s cards for our classmates. All of it – name, classroom number, city, state, etc. For a classroom of 20+ kids it’s a lot for any third and fourth grader to have to write all that info on a tiny little Valentine’s envelope! The fun part was when your class got to help sort the Valentine’s in the library and deliver them to each classroom. But, I remember how much my hand hurt writing all those addresses!
Any way, kids also LOVE receiving mail and learning about how the mail works is a great lesson for them. With a great mix of nonfiction and fun stories, this is a lesson plan that can be customized for your kids with fun songs and activities too!
