Storytime Theme: Mindfulness
Mindfulness has been on my mind a lot lately. As the days get shorter and the darkness lasts longer, many people struggle with their mental health. And not only that, the holidays, for some, are the most difficult times of the year. I know a number of people who use exercise, yoga, and meditation as ways to combat the darkness of winter.
I also think that by teaching kids these tools at a younger age can help them to self-regulate and acknowledge their feelings. It can be very powerful for kids to know what they are feeling, and also know that it’s okay to feel that way and find ways to feel better if they want/need to. This can start with even the littles of kids – identifying emotions and incorporating deep breathing and yoga poses into bedtime or naptime to calm down.
This week’s storytime lesson plan includes books that can be used as read alouds, but also includes titles that you might you as references rather than read cover-to-cover. If you want to learn more about offering yoga storytime, check out my post. Otherwise, as always, take what works for you and leave what doesn’t! Hopefully, there are some resources here that inspire you to create a storytime about mindfulness.
