Top Ten Tuesday: 2022 Halloween Picture Books
With just a few days left before Halloween, I couldn’t let this Halloween Freebie week go without sharing some brand-new Halloween picture books. I did cheat just a bit with a few board books as well, but these are too fun to miss this holiday season!
2022 Halloween Picture Books
Construction Site Gets a Fright!
by Sherri Duskey Rinker, illustrated by AG Ford
On a dark and windy Halloween night, the trucks are ready for bedtime. But with tricks and treats on their minds, the familiar construction site starts to seem a little eerie! Lift the flaps to turn spooky scares into silly surprises, as the trucks find out that they are all safe and sound—and learn that laughing with friends is the best way to turn fright into fun!
Countdown to Halloween
by Greg Paprocki
Halloween is coming! Toddlers learn to count down from 10 by finding objects hidden throughout these charming scenes of fall fun rendered in illustrator Greg Paprocki’s classically retro midcentury art style. From walking through corn mazes and bobbing for apples to choosing costumes and telling spooky stories around a fire, there’s excitement on every page. The final spread is packed with surprises! Discover new details in each illustration with every successive reading.
Creepy Crayon!
by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated by Peter Brown
Jasper Rabbit has a problem: he is NOT doing well in school. His spelling tests? Disasters. His math quizzes? Frightening to behold. But one day, he finds a crayon lying in the gutter. Purple. Pointy. Perfect. Somehow…it looked happy to see him. And it wants to help.
At first, Jasper is excited. Everything is going great. His spelling is fantastic. His math is stupendous. And best of all, he doesn’t have to do ANY work! But then the crayon starts acting weird. It’s everywhere, and it wants to do everything. And Jasper must find a way to get rid of it before it takes over his life. The only problem? The creepy crayon will not leave.
Emi Isn’t Scared of Monsters
by Alina Tysoe
Emi is not scared of monsters. Definitely not. Not even a teeny bit. In fact, Emi is so not scared that tonight she has a plan to catch a monster herself. She and her puppy side-kick, Cookie, have set a trap and are, very bravely, hiding in wait under the covers. But, when Cookie chases her runaway ball into the dangerous dark of the house, Emi must face her fears as this monster hunt turns into a rescue mission!
If Animals Trick-or-Treated
by Ann Whitford Paul, illustrated by David Walker
If animals trick-or-treated . . .what would they do on Halloween night?
Owlet and friends would knock-knock-knock
at nests, outside dens, and under a rock,
promising a trick if they didn’t get treats.
And Parrot would give out her yummy seed sweets.
If Your Babysitter Is a Bruja
by Ana Siqueira, illustrated by Irena Freitas
On the night before Halloween, a new babysitter might be more than she appears. If she wears a black sombrero and cackles like a crow, she might just be a bruja! One little girl is determined not to fall victim to an evil witch or her cats. She knows bath time is really the bruja’s way of putting her in a boiling cauldron, and the only way to keep her at bay is with a magic potion—or is it?
The Monsters on the Broom
by Annemarie Riley Guertin, illustrated by Shauna Lynn Panczyszyn
Spooky Halloween creatures climb on a broom for an exciting flight. From witches who cackle “hee hee hee” to ghosts who wail “who hoo hooo,” young readers will love acting out the different monster sounds and singing a Halloween version of a song they know well!
The Scariest Story You’ve Ever Heard
by Ron Keres, illustrated by Arthur Lins
On a stormy night, the power goes out in one family’s house — and two young brothers dare to investigate some mysterious sounds they are hearing…
CREEEAAAK… CRRRAAACK… THUMP… THUMP… THUMP… GRRRRRR!
…and so begins a night they will never forget!
A Friend for Ghost
by Suzanne Kaufman
“Above a noisy family,
On a crowded street,
In the big city,
In a dark lonely attic,
Lived Ghost.”
For Ghost, it can be pretty hard to make new friends. Some people are frightened, others don’t understand, most don’t seem to realize Ghost is even there.
One day when a bright red balloon wanders Ghost’s way, the connection is instantaneous. Together they do everything Ghost had ever hoped to share with a friend, but balloons rarely stick around for long. That’s when Ghost learns that when you’re looking for a friend, a friend might find you.
A Spoonful of Frogs
by Casey Lyall, illustrated by Vera Brosgol
A witch’s favorite treat is frog soup. Luckily, it’s healthy and easy to make. To give it that extra kick and a pop of color, the key ingredient is a spoonful of frogs. But how do you keep the frogs on the spoon? They hop, they leap, they hide . . . and they escape. What is a poor witch to do?
