Blogging A to Z: Time

I think today’s post is actually one of the hardest aspects to implement because everyone is so busy with non-stop schedules. It’s all about the time. Prioritizing reading in your daily schedule show kids that reading is a valuable way to spend time. And that the expectation is that it’s a daily practice.

This is easier said than done, for sure. First, you have to find the time. And this is where you can get creative. Maybe you can fit in reading here and there throughout the day and if you can – that’s great. Other families might find it easier to say at this specific time, reading is going to happen.

Blogging A to Z: Time

Finding Time to Read

A great place to begin is looking at the downtime for kids, if you have a child who has been at school all day, the last thing they’re going to want to do when they get home is to sit quietly and read. Maybe that means you head to an extracurricular or the park to blow off some steam. Then maybe you try reading time as you prep dinner.

It could also be that you’re running siblings to extracurriculars. Bring books and spend time reading while you wait for practice to finish up! Bedtime is usually considered a great time to read, but if your child doesn’t like to read, trying to get them to read at bedtime just might get them all riled up instead of calming down – not what you want before bed.

Maybe you’ve got an early riser who has ten minutes before school in the morning – 10 minutes is better than 0 minutes, so have them pick up a book. Honestly, it doesn’t matter when, it just matters that they are! When does your family like to read?

For the month of April, I’ll be sharing tips for reaching reluctant readers as part of the Blogging A to Z Challenge. There are dozens of reasons why a child might be considered a “reluctant reader.” As summer nears, continued reading practice helps students to keep the reading skills they learned while reading for fun. But, that’s not easy when a child doesn’t want to sit down and read. I’ll be sharing 26 tips to meet reluctant readers where they are. And hopefully find a way to make reading bearable, if not even something they want to do!
