Storytime Theme: Apartment Living
People live in all different types of housing! But you might be surprised that so few books are set in apartment buildings. I don’t even live in a big city and we have a ton of apartment buildings in our community. I’m always looking for ways to show kids that they are seen in the books they read and this is another way to do that.
I will say that most of these titles really focus on city living, so if you live in an apartment in a more suburban area or an apartment that is a little different, you still might not see a similar living arrangement. Ranging from the everyday to the very absurd, you’re sure to find some great books about apartment living on this list!

Songs

This little rhyme is sooo much fun to do with kids of different ages! - “Houses” fingerplay – Storytime Katie
I’d change the last word to home, instead of house and it would work perfectly for this storytime! - House Shapes feltboard – Read Sarah Read
Again, more focused on house instead of apartment building, but I think you could make it work (when in doubt, add more windows!)
Activities
- Juice Box Apartments – Art Projects for Kids
This looks super cut and could be covered in simple brown paper to make it nice and easy! Plus, who doesn’t love a juice box? - Paperbag Apartment Building – Snippety Gibbet
This is a little something different, focusing on a house, but you could easily add lots of windows to create an apartment building instead! - What’s Inside? – Creative Jewish Mom
This would be a lot of work without the pre-cut cardboard, but a simpler modified version might still work!
