Storytime Theme: Pete the Cat

Pete the Cat is one of the most popular children’s book characters at my library! Kids absolutely adore Pete and all his funny stories. While you could pair Pete the Cat books with other cat stories, books about colors, counting, or any number of themes, today I’m sharing a Pete the Cat storytime. All Pete the Cat, all the time!

There are dozens of Pete the Cat books to choose from, today I’m highlighting just nine. And they are in categories today. The top three are all sing-a-long books. If you’ve ever worked with a large group of PreK kids, sing-a-long books are perfect for gaining attention. Kids love to hear you sing a book instead of read it! The second row are more typical picture books. One of my favorite Pete the Cat books is I Love My White Shoes! which also includes some singing. And finally the bottom row are easy readers – perfect for a very young group where you need to keep things moving quickly or for your older kids who are ready to start reading along with you. I think you’ll have a fabulous time no matter what you read!

  • You can find even more sing-a-long books and songs on the Pete the Cat website!

Activities

  • Color Recognition – A few years ago I made a simple shoe cut-out in the different colors of Pete’s shoes in I Love My White Shoes and had the kids wave them in the air as his shoes got messy. You can learn more about it from my previous blog post!
  • Sensory Walk – Great examples from Hello Wonderful
A sensory walk allows kids to experience different textures on their feet. If you use sand, you can tie in Pete at the Beach very easily!
  • Pete the Cat Button Craft – Toddler Approved
Inspired by Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, your toddler can add their own buttons to Pete!
  • Find even more coloring and activity sheets from the Pete the Cat website!
