Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Pet Peeves
What an interesting topic! There are so many opinions about how and what to read out there, but I liked diving into the things that bother me. Whether it’s from the author, publisher, or from readers, here are my top ten bookish pet peeves!
- Multiple POVs without any clear indication between characters
I typically love multiple POVs, but as an author you need to do a very clear job of identifying each character well enough not to confuse the reader. - Extra long chapters
I’m a take-a-break-at-the-end-of-a-chapter type of girl… so when the chapters are extensive, it’s a little annoying. - Movie tie-in covers
Why? When the original covers are infinitely better designed! - Poorly executed trilogies
I’m not a huge fan of trilogies because there is usually one book that I end up wanting to throw across the room because it’s either trying to add too many new characters, tie up too many loose ends, etc. - Backmatter that could be helpful at the beginning of the book, but that you don’t discover until the end
This bugs me so much especially when it comes to a timeline, map, or vocabulary definitions that would have made the book even better while reading it. - No bibliography in a nonfiction book
You just happen to know all there is to know about a subject and don’t have to do research? - Footnotes
I can never figure out how to read footnotes, as soon as you seen the number, after you’ve finished the paragraph or page. I’ve never been able to successfully read something well with footnotes. - Waiting for the next book in a series to be published
I often don’t read new series for this very reason. I tend to forget everything, so it’s either re-reading a prior book again or trying to remember as I read the newest in the series. - No description on the cover or jacket
How am I supposed to know if I want to read it or not? Especially when there are quotes/endorsements for a previous novel on the back. That’s great, but what about this one? - People with strong opinions about the “right” type of reading
Graphic novels, audiobooks, magazines, newspapers, video games, etc? All of this counts as reading in my world! It shouldn’t whether you’re reading the newest contemporary romance or a classic, reading is reading!

I point blank refuse to read a book with multi POVs if I can’t work out who is who. It’s so confusing! It’s even worse when they’re differnder genders with no distinction.

Movie tie-in covers were on my list this week too. I also hate extra long chapters, and multiple POVs with no distinction between characters.

I agree with your last one. Let people read what they enjoy reading. It’s just like watching movies, not everyone likes the same movies and no one seems to look down on people about that.
