2021 National Book Awards Longlist
I’m not sure that most people are aware that the National Book Award includes a young people’s category. Typically, you might hear mention of the National Book Award on NPR, maybe hear an interview with an author. But, when it comes to children’s and young adult literature, I don’t think many people think of the National Book Award.
What’s interesting, is that there is often an amazing longlist of titles. Some of the titles I recognize and others that are new to me. I will say that the books often skew toward the young adult titles, but that’s not a bad thing. There are some amazing writers out there and this is just another way to get these books into the hands of kids and teens.
The 2021 National Book Awards longlist was announced last week with the finalists being announced on October 5. Winners will be announced on November 17, with plenty of time to stock up on new titles for the holiday season!
This year, there are ten titles on the longlist, two authors who have been on the list before with other authors winning a number of prestigious awards in the literary world.

What I love about this list is the diversity! The creators are BIPOC and LGBTQ+, and the titles are also diverse – in format, content, and genre. I just finished reading Last Night at the Telegraph Club and I really enjoyed the story and was so happy to see it on the list!
