Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Read In One Sitting
I honestly don’t remember exactly what books I read in one sitting. Rather I focused on creating a list of books that might grab a reluctant reader’s attention. Whether they’re a little shorter (think under 250 pages) or they’re in an easy to read format like graphic novels or novels in verse, these books are all great!
After J.K. Rowling released a book that was over 700 pages, it almost seemed as though it gave a green light for other authors to do similar lengths. I don’t know if there are many that can pull off that amount of text when it comes to a middle grade or even a YA novel. I think it actually takes more control and finesse to come up with a book that hits that 200-250 page mark. Titles that grab a reader’s attention and suck them in. Authors like Jason Reynolds, Kate DiCamillo, and Torrey Maldonado are amazing at this skill. telling the story in a succinct and yet powerful way.
You’ll often find those longer texts in fantasy and science fiction genres as there is a lot more world-building that goes along with the story. This can be difficult to do in a shorter length book. But, at the same time, look at books like The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin, a fantasy master who wrote this specific title in under 200 pages. The same could be said for The Giver by Lois Lowry that clocks in at just over 200 pages. I think it’s important to share all types of books with kids, but when it comes to a reader who is hesitant to begin with, try one of the titles below first!
