Reading Is More Than Just Books

If you’ve got a kid in your family, in your classroom, in your library who just doesn’t like to read, have you tried introducing them to something other than books? Reading Is More Than Just Books – if you’ve got a self-proclaimed nonreader at home, try magazines with tons of visuals and easy-to-read content!. It seems silly, but it just might work! Today, I’m going to be talking specifically about magazines, but this could apply to audiobooks as well!

Growing up, I think each of my siblings and I always had a subscription to a magazine. It’s a great way to explore an interest and you get new content delivered to your house every month! And who doesn’t like fun mail?!?! Magazines also make really great gifts too! Give a magazine as a gift and it lasts a whole year!

Magazines are great because they are extremely visual – with loads of illustrations, photographs, graphs and other supporting artwork. Plus, the content is provided to readers in small pieces – a pop-out on this page, a one-to-two page article here or there. And they don’t have to read cover to cover. You can page through them searching for something that catches your eye, you can open to a random page and just start reading. Magazines are really accessible to kids that may find books a little overwhelming and intimidating.

There are all sorts of magazines for kids – general interest, sports, animals, outdoor activities, etc. I think many people will recognize Highlights magazine – I’m sure your doctor’s office had it available in the waiting room just like mine! Highlights also has younger versions for even our smallest readers – Highlights High Five.

My brothers LOVED Sports Illustrated for Kids when they were younger. They would pour over sports stats and bios for hours! Ranger Rick was also popular in our house for a few years – it’s one of the longest running children’s magazines about nature that’s available! Speaking of nature, you can’t go wrong with Nat Geo for Kids – with gorgeous photographs and easy to digest content, kids will love learning about animals!

I’m not as familiar with ASK, but with a lot of great reviews, this magazines connects science and art together. And with no ads – this is full of content! Another one that I’m not as familiar with is Kazoo a magazine that “inspire girls to be “strong, smart, fierce and, above all, true to themselves.”

These are just a few of the many options available – and be sure to check age range because a lot of magazines have an even younger title for kids from 3-6 and then from 6-12. And one final note on children’s magazines, if a subscription just isn’t in your budget right now or you want to check out a copy before you buy – try your local public library! We have at least 12-15 magazine titles that kids can check out!
