Slice of Life Day 6: Tropical Day
After a very long and very snowy February, one of my department heads floated the idea of a themed dress-down day – something beach-y and tropical in the midst of our cold winter. I thought it might be the perfect thing to brighten up the library after a dreary start to the year.
Yesterday, we all came dressed for the beach in bright colors, Hawaiian print shirts. We found a few decorations to brighten up the library and some leis for the staff to wear. We put on some Hawaiian and Caribbean music (our patrons are limited in the amount of time they can stay in the building right now) and had a lot of fun! A staff member even ordered pizza for lunch – including a Hawaiian pizza to add to our theme!
I wanted to make the day a little more special, so I brought in frozen fruit and orange juice to make smoothies and then also took some time on Thursday night to bake a mango-coconut cake that turned out much better than my red velvet cupcake fiasco last weekend.
It’s been so hard over the past year, and I’ve looked for ways to boost morale. I think it’s important to make sure your staff feel seen and feel appreciated. A cake really isn’t much, but I really do value my staff and appreciate how much they’re doing as we continue to navigate the pandemic.
What ways have you found to show appreciation for people in your life?
This is my third year participating in the Slice of Life Challenge. I’ll be sharing brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. I hope you enjoy just a slice of my life as a librarian, book lover, and blogger!

Let me tell you, this is by far the prettiest thing I’ve ever made! What you don’t see is the massive mess I made with buttercream frosting that ended up literally all over my kitchen after a mixer issue!

A tropical day sounds like fun! The cake looks SO delicious! We had “fun” day for our middle school students yesterday with a choice board of holidays (Oreo Day, First Day of Spring) with activities.

Doesn’t it make life so much more fun when you have a theme day?

I’m trying to plan some fun activities for my class in a few weeks. We have had our typical March school break moved to April (due to Covid) so I think everyone’s mind is on trying not to think about how we wish we were on vacation. Tropical day sounds fun! And your cake looks yummy!
