Slice of Life Day 5: New Book, New Possibilities
A new book is a world of new possibilities. I get so excited when I’m starting a new book! What will I get out of this book? The possibilities are endless. I could learn something new, connect with a character that allows me to connect with someone in my life at a deeper level, have a ugly cathartic cry, meet other readers who loved it as much as I did. Books open worlds to readers if they are open to discovering them.
Just the other night, I finally, finally opened up Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim. It’s a book that I’ve been planning to read for months! I have the sequel as an ARC that is getting published next Tuesday. I literally read just seven pages the other night and promptly fell asleep with my face in my book (something that happens more often than not). The story already pulled me in with a compelling main character (Amaya or Silverfish as she is now known), an intriguing setting (debtor ship), and a bad guy (Kamon Mercado) that I’m already rooting against.
The description is amazing and I really can’t wait to see what happens! “The first novel in a sweeping fantasy duology, this gender-swapped retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo is packed with high-stakes adventure, romance, dueling identities, and breathtaking betrayals…”
I might just have to track down the Wishbone episode of The Count of Monte Cristo as I’m not super familiar with the plotline. (Older millennials might be the only ones who get this reference especially if they grew up watching PBS.) Is it any surprise that I became a librarian with favorite shows from my childhood were all about books? Reading Rainbow, Wishbone?
Reading Rut
What more could you ask for in a YA novel? Last summer, I was in a little bit of a reading rut. The Six of Crows duology pulled me out of my reading rut with adventure, intrigue, and romance. So, I’m hoping this duology is just as good. I’m honestly not a huge fan of trilogies because there’s always going to be one book that just isn’t as strong as the other two. A duology allows less space for extra and forces the story to keep moving.
What book have you read recently that pulled you in right from the beginning and has you talking about?
This is my third year participating in the Slice of Life Challenge. I’ll be sharing brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. I hope you enjoy just a slice of my life as a librarian, book lover, and blogger!
