Four on Friday: Abraham Lincoln

Happy Birthday, Abe Lincoln! The 16th President of the United States of America is one of the most famous. Immortalized both in the Lincoln Memorial and on Mount Rushmore, Abraham Lincoln’s life was not easy, but he made a lasting impact on our country. Today I’m sharing Four on Friday: Abraham Lincoln.

Growing up, my parents often had conferences that were held in D.C. during July. Granted, no one wants to be in D.C. in July. I’ll never understand why our nation’s capital was built on such marshy and swampy grounds. Needless to say, my parents made these trips not only entertaining, but also educational. We visited memorials, museums, and walked more miles than I can count.

The Lincoln Memorial is one of my favorite places in all of D.C. Standing on the steps you can look straight up the Mall and see so many of the sights. The best time of day is to stop just as the sun is setting and the lights are turning on. It’s gorgeous. We’ve also taken the tour of Ford’s Theatre and the house across the street where Abraham Lincoln passed. And you must stop by the Museum of American History where you can see Lincoln’s famous hat.

Rather than share typical biographies about Abraham Lincoln, I decided to try something a little different. This list includes different styles of writing from narrative nonfiction and picture books to an entire title formatted like a newspaper. These books focus mainly on what happened after Lincoln died -finding his killer, preventing a grave robbery, and creating a lasting monument. If you’re looking for biographies about Abraham Lincoln, check out Bookroo.

  • Chasing Lincoln’s Killer by James L. Swanson
Narrative nonfiction is fascinating and Swanson follows John Wilkes Booth in the hours and days following the shooting of President Lincoln. A gripping thriller filled with facts I never knew.
  • Lincoln Shot: A President’s Life Remembered by Barry Denenberg, illustrated by Christopher H. Bing
Created in a newspaper format, this biography follows Lincon’s life from a cabin in Illinois to the White House.
  • Lincoln’s Grave Robbers by Steve Sheinkin
Another crazy story, I never knew about a counterfeiting ring that tried to steal Lincoln’s body from his grave to exchange for their ringleader’s freedom.
  • Monument Maker: Daniel Chester French and the Lincoln Memorial by Linda Booth Sweeney, illustrated by Shawn Fields
A powerful ode and probably one of my favorite locations in D.C. This is the story of the man behind the monument.

If you’re looking for more great read aloud books all about President and elections, check out this list. It’s a few years old, but that doesn’t mean the books still aren’t fun to read!
