African American Children’s Book Fair
If you’re looking for a way to support African American authors and illustrators, especially during Black History Month, you’ve got to check out the 29th Annual African American Children’s Book Fair. It’s all virtual this year and it’s free! And, let me tell you, boy, do they have an amazing line-up of children’s book creators.
Three dozen authors and illustrators and what I love is that the organizers have done an amazing job of including picture book creators alongside middle grade and young adult authors. There is truly something for everyone. I’m familiar with almost all of the participants, but I haven’t read all of their most recent titles, so now I get to add some more great books to my TBR!
Virtual
This annual event is hosted by the African American Children’s Book Project which was created in 1992 “to promote and preserve children’s literature written by or about African Americans.” Typically, this is a live event hosted in Philadelphia with thousands of people coming to check it out. But the organizers have moved to a virtual event like so many other events over the past year.
I am so excited because typically, I’m at work or have other plans every year. But, all I’ve got going is our own library’s storytime honoring Black History Month in the morning. I’m trying a little something new by highlighting Black authors and illustrators. But, I’m also sprinkling in a few booktalks about African American picture book biographies. We’ll see how it goes! And then I’m definitely going to go check this book fair out!
