Four on Friday: Pigeons

I was wondering what to talk about on today’s post and I’ll often hit up Twitter and Instagram to look for some ideas and inspiration. I saw a post featuring Don’t Feed the Coos and since I literally had just finished reading Coo, I felt like I had my theme!

Granted, when most people think about pigeon-themed stories, I’d expect a specific pigeon to come to mind. Mo Willems’ famous pigeon. It’s probably one of my favorite read aloud books, especially if you’re willing to get really silly with how ridiculous pigeon gets. I was even able to scoop up a pigeon stuffie from Kohl’s Cares program. If you’re not familiar, Kohl’s will have stuffies and books for $5 each. Plus, the money goes to charities which is an awesome perk as well! Keep your eyes open for different characters as they do a few different ones each year.

But, let me get back to pigeons. Today I’m sharing four books from picture books to middle grade books, so there’s really is something for everyone! If you live in the city, you are probably very familiar with these little creatures, but for those who live in rural areas, pigeons aren’t all that common.

Don’t forget, picture books sharing information that is unfamiliar to kids is a great way to practice early literacy skills. When they begin learning to read, they’ll already have the information in their head as to what pigeons are, they get the chance to just focus on reading the words.

Four on Friday: Pigeons

  1. Coo by Kaela Noel
A little girl grows up as part of a flock of pigeons until one day one is injured. Does Coo put herself at risk to save a friend? I just finished reading this book and found it delightful!
  2. Don’t Feed the Coos! by Jonathan Stutzman, illustrated by Heather Fox
If you haven’t gotten the chance to read Llama Destroys the World by the same creators, you’re definitely missing out! I’m super excited to check out this cautionary tale!
  3. Perfect Pigeons by Katherine Battersby
One little pigeon stands out from its flock in this story about celebrating differences! Plus, how cute are those little pigeons? I love the color palette!
  4. Real Pigeons Fight Crime by Andrew McDonald, illustrated by Ben Wood
An illustrated chapter book that’s perfect for fans of Dog Man and Bad Guys, both of which are super popular at our library!

If you’re looking for more great read aloud books all about birds, check out this list. The list is a few years old, but that doesn’t mean the books still aren’t fun to read!
