Newton and Curie: The Science Squirrels
Synopsis:
“When an apple falls on his head, Newton the squirrel begins to wonder how the world works. Listening in on a lesson about the force of gravity, he decides to try his own experiments with the help of his sister, Curie. Learning to make simple machines, they discover that science is for everyone—even squirrels. And when a birds’ nest falls out of a nearby tree, only Newton and Curie, using their inventions and quick scientific thinking, can save the day! This always inquisitive and resourceful pair solves real-life problems and has fun along the way. This latest from bestselling author Daniel Kirk is a light introduction to the principles of STEAM, which is taught in schools.”
Review:
If you’ve got a young scientist on your hands, this is the perfect book to introduce them to physics concepts in an easy way. Daniel Kirk, the author of Library Mouse, does for science what he did for writing many years ago. These adorable little squirrels learn about simple machines to help with real-life problems (for squirrels).
With easy to understand explanations and adorable pictures, this is sure to encourage any young scientist to explore even more. It might even encourage science-adverse kids to understand how science can be found all around us!
A Little Bit More:
I love finding picture books that can be read aloud that help to explain difficult concepts and Newton and Curie: The Science Squirrels is definitely one of them. When you can find a picture book that works in classes other than literature, it’s pretty great! This book could easily be used in an elementary school classroom. Maybe even extending the learning by identifying another problem that squirrels might have that can be resolved with another type of simple machine.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Newton and Curie again in another STEM title in the future!
