It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 11/23/2020

What I Read

This past week I read three more books and can see the light at the end of my 2020 TBR shelf! I was a little worried that Agnes at the End of the World by Kelly McWilliams would be too much to read right now. It’s the story of a teen girl living during a global pandemic, but that’s where the similarities with 2020 ended. This story deals with faith and science, family and community and was an all together really great read.

Next I read We Are Not Free by Traci Chee a historical fiction novel set during World War II as the U.S. Government rounded up Japanese citizens and forced them into internment camps. From the perspective of 14 teens, this story dove much deeper into the past than I ever learned in school. It took me a bit to get everyone organized in my mind, but each story was unique and still intertwined around the others. This would make a great read for high school kids learning about World War II.

Finally, I read The Boys In the Back Row by Mike Jung which is a story about friendship at its core. Matt and Eric have been best friends for a few years, but when Eric finds out he’s moving they decide on one last epic adventure together! They confront bullies along the way as they are unapologetic about their comic book geekiness and best friend status.

What I’m Planning to Read

I’m extremely excited and kind of flailing at the same time for what’s to come this week. Like so many, we have canceled our Thanksgiving plans to see family. We’ll see my partner’s mom, but she comes over every Sunday for dinner anyway, so that’s not anything really new. We won’t see his dad’s family or any of my family as we just don’t want to risk anything, even with how careful we’re all being.

So, I’m in charge of making a (small) Thanksgiving dinner – prepping, planning, the whole thing. It’s a little daunting, to say the least. But, what I’m excited about? The library is actually closed for four days in a row. With the way our shortened hours have been working, it just seemed like the best choice. Plus, the building can just sit for a few days without people coming and going constantly. That being said, I don’t have to work, worry about work, listen for my phone to ring, nothing! That is super exciting! And once Thanksgiving dinner is over, I’m going to sit and read all weekend long!

Here’s what I’ve got lined up for sure and a bunch of extras waiting in the wings! I started The Time of Green Magic by Hilary McKay last night, plus I have Accidental by Alex Richards, and Everything Sad Is Untrue by Daniel Nayeri.

What are your reading plans this holiday week?
