It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 11/9/2020

What I Read

This was a busy week both nationally and personally. I spent much of my week trying not to be too obsessive about the election. But, when you live with a photojournalist who was covering the election, it’s kind of hard not to. My first stressor? Making sure he came home safe every day. In a world where many people are suspicious of “fake” news and people of color in general, I spend much of my time worried about my partner’s safety.

Then came the fact that it took sooooo long to count all those mail-in ballots in my home state of Pennsylvania. And let me tell you, it was very much a celebration for so many people when they finally announced the results. Like I mentioned yesterday, now comes the hard part – the hard work of making changes for the good of all people.

Personally, I’ve been spending the majority of my days pouring over a budget that needs to eke out a little more money and just doesn’t have anything left to give. In the end, I’m happy with what I was able to do, now it’s up to my local government to accept it. Fingers crossed!

With everything going on, I still read two books this week, so I consider that a success! I read The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates by Jenny Pearson. And I’ll be honest, I can always tell when the author is British. For whatever reason, the British authors I read, write off-the-wall books! They’re crazy journeys, unbelievable situations, and quirky characters. And Freddie Yates was no different! It’s a fun adventure read, for sure!

I also read What We Found in the Corn Maze and How It Saved a Dragon by Henry Clark. Compared to the Mr. Lemoncello series, which is a perfect comparison – silly, adventurous, and so fun! I enjoyed this story filled with wordplay more than I was expecting as a fantasy story.

What I’m Planning to Read

I have two books that I’m hoping to read this week. The Truth According to Blue by Eve Yohalem was on my list last week, but I didn’t get to it yet. And I also grabbed We Are Not From Here by Jenny Torres Sanchez. This YA novel looks like it’s going to be a tough read, but sometimes those are the best books of the year. If I have a little extra time, I might grab The Circus Rose by Betsy Cornwell too. I’ve enjoyed her previous books, so I’m excited for this next book.
