It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 10/5/2020
What I Read
I’m moving forward with this reading! Got held up in July and August, but my reading game is back and I’m super excited by it! I finished up The Candy Mafia by Lavie Tidhar and absolutely loved the noir-feeling of the book. You can read my review that I posted earlier this week.
I then read Sara and the Search for Normal by Wesley King about a young girl diagnosed with a number of mental illnesses striving to be “normal.” Reading about mental illness always helps me to learn more and better understand the close family and friends in my life that struggle with their own mental illness. Wesley King does a phenomenal job with this book – it was extremely powerful, heartbreaking, and hopeful too.
Finally, I read Above All Else by Dana Alison Levy about two high schoolers whose life-long dream to climb Mt. Everest comes true amidst a host of issues that crop up throughout the story. I finished most of this novel in one sitting because I just felt the need to know what happened. The story mentions summit fever when climbers stop listening to the sherpas and those who know best because they just want to get to the top. That’s how I felt reading this book – I just had to know what happened. I don’t know how a book about climbing mountains also backs such a punch in terms of growing up, mental illness, family obligation, social issues, and so much more, but it does. Such a fast-paced read!
What I’m Planning to Read
So I didn’t get a chance to pick up Dear Universe by Florence Gonsalves last week, so that’s first up right now. I also grabbed The Eagle Huntress: The True Story of the Girl Who Soared Beyond Expectation by Aisholpan Nurgaiv with Liz Welch. I’m excited to read a book that shines a light on a tradition I know nothing about. I also grabbed Quintessence by Jess Redman. I love how Jess weaves fantasy into the everyday world and am excited to read this one!
