Back-End Blog Updates

I am so proud of myself! I spent a little time yesterday working on the back-end of my blog. And if I did it right, you shouldn’t see any differences to the front-end. Let me start by saying I’m not a tech-savvy person. I know basic troubleshooting – turn it off and back on again, etc. I also know with enough words searched on Google, you can usually find step-by-step instructions for fixing many issues. My partner did the original design and set-up of my blog, so he (at the time) inherently knew more about the ins and outs of my WordPress theme.

Back-End Blog Updates

Last night, I created a child theme, moved all of my customizations to that folder, and then updated my theme! I was able to make all these changes by accessing my hosting site, creating a new folder under themes and adding new files that I created myself. For the techies of the group, this isn’t hard to do. But for me, I was super excited that I figured it out!

A child theme is basically a copy of your theme of choice that you use to make all your customizations. The theme then calls back to the parent theme for all the basic set-up of your design. That way, when you update your parent theme, it doesn’t override all your customizations. That’s a lot of jargon to basically say it keeps your blog looking pretty.

It was a nice “win” in an otherwise exhausting week of work and now if I can just get the creative side of my brain to get to work brainstorming new content, I’d be ecstatic!

What’s something you’ve done recently that’s made you feel proud?
