7 Children’s Titles for Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the celebration of the news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally stretching to the farthest reaches of the Confederacy at the time, Texas. It took over two years for the news of emancipation to reach Texas! General Gordon Granger read aloud the proclamation in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 – 165 years ago.
This holiday is celebrated annually in Texas. This year, in light of continued protests for equality in America, more people are recognizing Juneteenth as an official holiday, giving it recognition as one small step on a long path. In fact, the Mayor of Philadelphia declared Juneteenth an official Philadelphia holiday (and that’s where I found the gorgeous header photo for this post, from the WHYY article).
