Books & Cooks Letter G: Ginger
This year I’m going to be combining two of my passions – cooking and kid lit for Books & Cooks! I’ll be bringing you great recipes based on spices of the alphabet that pair perfectly with kid lit books! Next up? The letter G and spicy ginger!
Spice: Ginger
Ginger is an awesome spice that can be used for both savory and sweet dishes! I love a chewy ginger cookie and I could eat this Thai Red Curry Noodle Soup every week! Fresh ginger makes a recipe like the one below completely worth it! And if you’re new to using ginger, peel (with a vegetable peeler) and use what you need and store the rest of it in a plastic bag in the freezer (it will last much longer!)
Book Review: A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat
Fair warning, I haven’t read this brand new book yet! It’s got a great rating on Goodreads and a great friend gave it a rave review so I’m super excited to get my hands on this gorgeous book! I’m intrigued by the fantasy genre while still delving into issues like privilege and protest. Plus, how could you not want to read this book with a description like this, “Set in a Thai-inspired fantasy world, Christina Soontornvat’s twist on Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables is a dazzling, fast-paced adventure that explores the difference between law and justice — and asks whether one child can shine a light in the dark.”?
Recipe: Thai Red Curry Noodle Soup
Oh my gosh! I’m in love with Thai Red Curry Noodle Soup, it’s so creamy and sweet and spicy and slurp-able! Plus the combination of Thai red curry paste and coconut milk is a must-have in our house almost weekly! Also, if you’ve never used fish sauce, a fair warning – it doesn’t smell great. As in, it smells so bad, but adds so much umami flavor. Trust me. And you can add all sorts of things to this recipe – add some veggies and switch up the protein to fit your taste and enjoy!
During the month of April, I’ll be participating in the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge 2020. For my theme this year (Books & Cooks), I’ll be combing children’s books with cooking spices and including a recipe to bring the book into your very own kitchen! I love to cook and read, so I thought this would be a fun way to combine two of my passions. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! Let’s dig in! And if you want to see what I’ve done in the past, check out the past few years – 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019!

It’s so true! Ginger really does cross cultures and styles of cooking!

Ginger is delicious in every course from soup to dessert to drinks, and every meal, from breakfast cereal to supper. I love it in everything. (Maybe even Italian? lol Okay, maybe not, but I bet you could make a wonderful not-very-Italian ravioli with ginger.) I also just read a review for the book and it’s on my TBR list, too.

Garlic is another “G” spice I love, but I thought ginger was so much more exciting to talk about!
