It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 3/30/2020
Last Week
I did it! I read more than 0.5 of a book! On Monday our Governor put our county under a stay at home order which, honestly was the best thing to happen. Once I got everything figured out staff-wise and technology-wise, I was a lot calmer this week. Well, except for stressing that I gave our foster turtle a respiratory infection. But, a call to the vet has assured me that he’s fine!
Back to what I was reading – I finished Mulan and really enjoyed it! It’s written in what I consider is Grace Lin’s style weaving folklore into a new story. Then I threw my reading plan out the window and went rogue. I picked up a contemporary YA romance and it was perfection. It was exactly what I needed to escape for a few hours – Meet Me At Midnight by Jessica Pennington has all the best stuff – enemies to lovers, prank wars and all set during a summer on a gorgeous lake.
After that, I felt like getting back to my TBR pile and read Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi which made me uncomfortable, opened my eyes to parts of history I didn’t know, and really helped me better understand how deeply entrenched our country’s history is in racism. I really appreciated that not only did it focus on racism, but also the intersectionality of race and women’s rights. It’s a must-read.
I just started The Blackbird Girls by Anne Blankman about the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl and what happened to two girls afterward. It’s promising three perspectives and I’m really excited to read this story of unlikely friendship during a very trying time.
Reading List for Week of 3/30/2020
Now that I feel a little more like getting some reading done, I still want to get to Most Likely by Sarah Watson. It’s been in my TBR pile for a couple of weeks, so that’s first up after I finish The Blackbird Girls. After that, I’ve heard great things about A Home for Goddesses and Dogs by Leslie Connor, plus Mañanaland by Pam Muñoz Ryan, and The Light In Hidden Places by Sharon Cameron.
It’ll be an interesting week as I’ll be working from home, but supposedly as of right now, our stay at home order will lift for work on Monday, April 6. I can’t really imagine that’ll be the case, it’s just a matter of what happens next. How long will the governor extend the order? How does it impact working from home? And what else can we do as a public library to continue to support our community?
How are you handling being stuck at home? Reading more or less?

I’m glad you were able to get back to reading this week. I still haven’t been able to. I read a few pages before I fall asleep, and I read the news, but otherwise I just haven’t been able to get myself to sit down and read. Even over the weekend, when I wasn’t trying to work, I felt like I needed to use my free time (when my daughter was occupying herself) checking in with family and friends. It’s like I can’t let myself escape into fiction. Sigh. Maybe this week. Have a good week yourself!

Hi Jen! Thankfully, I was able to catch up with a lot of friends and family and then happened to find the perfect book that sucked me to the point that I could escape for even just a little while! Good luck and stay safe!
