Slice of Life Day 21: Photographer’s Assistant

My partner is a freelance documentary and photojournalist. Which means he’s always meeting really interesting people while getting the chance to pursue his dream. As his girlfriend, I’ve helped a lot with different projects. We’ve covered a few weddings of friends and human light stands make his job just a little bit easier. Rather than having to go over to a light stand every time he needs to make a minor change, he’ll just ask me to make the adjustment while holding the flash.

Lighting Test

Last night, he was working on creating a specific style of portrait. He had seen something on social media and was trying to imitate the style but was having difficulty getting the lighting just right. So, he asked if I could stand in to see how the lighting played off my face. It’s truly amazing how moving a light barely an inch will change everything about a portrait. Different distances away from the subject, different heights, and different levels of intensity all affect the way a picture looks when taken.

There’s a lot of posts going around as couples are learning more about each other while working from home over the past week or so. We’re lucky in that we’ve been able to help each other out throughout our careers with the different skills that we have. Today, he’s off to provide some coronavirus coverage as a photojournalist. And I’m taking a little time for self-care and relaxing a bit before Monday rolls around again. I’m ready to pop open a new book and snuggle with the pup!

slice of life

This is my second year participating in the Slice of Life Challenge. I’ll be posting brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. A slice of my life as a librarian and blogger that I hope you enjoy!
