Storytime Theme: Black History Month
Black History Month is here! And I wanted to share a way you can celebrate this special month with some of your youngest patrons, students, or family members. Trying to make a rather complicated celebration as simple as I could, I wanted to highlight more than one individual. This storytime brings together music, writing, activism, and more to share the rich and complex history of African Americans.

Welome Song: Bread & Butter
Bread and butter
Marmalade and Jam
Let’s say hello as quiet as we can (whisper: hello)
…loud as we can
…slow as we can
…fast as we can
…high as we can
…low as we can
…nice as we can (big smile!)
Book: I Am Martin Luther King, Jr. by Brad Meltzer
Transition: Old MacDonald Had a Farm by Ella Fitzgerald
We have flannel board animals that I would probably use while she sings the song.
Book: My People by Langston Hughes
Transition: When the Saints Go Marching In by Louis Armstrong
I would probably pull out the shaker eggs and march around the room to this song.
Book: We March by Shane W. Evans
Goodbye Song: Bread & Butter
Bread and butter
Marmalade and Jam
Let’s say goodbye as quiet as we can (whisper: goodbye)
…loud as we can
…slow as we can
…fast as we can
…high as we can
…low as we can
…nice as we can (big smile!)
