Narwhals, the Unicorn of the Sea
I must be in a fantastical mindset this weekend as I posted about Bigfoot, Sasquatch and Yeti yesterday and today I’m sharing books about narwhals! Narwhals, the unicorn of the sea is an actual animal that lives in the arctic waters. These cousins of bottlenose dolphins, orcas, and belugas live in pods often in smaller groups that join together during the migratory season.
Did you know that the narwhal’s “horn” is actually a tooth? It is most commonly found on male narwhals and grows larger than eight feet in length. Scientists aren’t sure exactly what it’s used for, but most speculate it’s used for mating rituals. Recent studies suggest that the tooth has sensitive nerve endings that may be able to gauge water temperatures and more.
These whales are also the deepest divers in their family. They can dive thousands of feet down into the dark parts of the ocean to hunt. They can hold their breath for 20+ minutes! These are some of the most mysterious whales that live in the ocean waters due to their reclusive nature and icy habitat. Scientists are working with new technology and with Inuit communities who have a rich history with these mysterious animals to learn more about them. You can learn more about these amazing creatures too, on Wonderopolis!
