Please Don’t Eat Me by Liz Climo

Synopsis:

Please Don't Eat Me

Beloved author-illustrator Liz Climo is back with a hilarious take on (reluctant) friendship that will appeal to fans of We Don’t Eat Our Classmates and I Want My Hat Back!

When a carefree bunny is approached by a voracious bear in the woods, Bunny has just one request: “Please don’t eat me.”

But the bear has a never-ending list of requests, and Bunny realizes maybe Bear isn’t as hungry as he’d let on…maybe he just wants his new friend’s company for a while.

This witty and poignant exploration of predator and prey will have children and parents alike roaring with laughter–and looking for their next meal.”

Review:

I love picture books of all sorts – the sweet ones, the ones that have a positive message, and especially funny ones. Liz Climo is able to use very few words and create the perfect relationship between this bunny and bear. Even the illustrations are quite sparse which also leaves room for the humor. I especially loved it when the bunny is all soggy from being in the bear’s mouth. He’s just dripping wet and still trying to do anything and everything to get out of the situation all in one piece.

This is a great title to share with preschool and older as I can see the humor going right over a toddler’s head. You could also use this story as a partner read with two readers or as a reader’s theatre skit and work on tone. It’d definitely be a fun read for #ClassroomBookaDay as well. Authors and illustrators who can give a nod to adults while writing for kids are some of my favorites and this is definitely in that category.
