15 Picture Books About Bread
I love food! I especially love to cook for the people in my life. After hearing so many wonderful things about the book Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard, I knew that I not only had to get my hands on a copy but that I wanted to share 15 Picture Books About Bread.
Why Bread?
Why bread you might ask? Because I love bread. Because I love the smell of the yeast as it forces the dough to rise, I love kneading bread – filling it with love, and I love eating it warm out of the oven with a little butter, or oil and herbs. I love the age-old tradition of breaking bread. As I’ve mentioned before, my family gatherings revolve around food – what we’re currently eating, what we plan on eating next, and who’s in the kitchen helping out. And in my family, it’s just as much men as women in the kitchen, which I also love! Everyone has their own expertise and everyone rolls up their sleeves to pitch in. Now, even my niece and nephew are in the kitchen helping too and they’re both under five.
What I loved most about reading Fry Bread was not just that I learned so much about a bread important to so many Native tribes, but the illustrations shared that love of feeding people that I feel when I cook. Families and friends coming together over a meal. The same could be said for Hot, Hot Roti for Dada-ji by F. Zia which I took to a preschool where I did an outreach program for parents. With many families from India in my community, the moms were so excited to see a little piece of their culture displayed in the books I brought from the library. Because food brings people together.

Not exactly bread, but also featuring tortillas, The Three Little Tamales is super-fun, too. I love the uniqueness of this list.
