Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Genre (Middle Grade Realistic Fiction)
I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for middle grade realistic fiction – it’s my go-to genre and I’m honestly not sure why that is. I had a perfectly “normal” middle grade experience. I had a group of friends, I did a lot of babysitting, played piano and tennis, and loved to read. I was definitely an awkward pre-teen – got my glasses and braces in fifth grade and what I remember most of my middle school years are the teachers who read aloud to us in class.
What I love about realistic fiction in middle grade novels now is that although these books deal with some really tough topics they always end with a little bit of hope. And in today’s world, I love that small amount of optimism. So, here are some of my favorite middle grade fiction titles!
- Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed
- The Bridge Home by Padma Venktraman
- Caterpillar Summer by Gillian McDunn
- Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World by Ashley Herring Blake
- Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish by Pablo Cartaya
- Pie in the Sky by Remy Lai
- The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart
- Three Pennies by Melanie Crowder
- Up for Air by Laurie Morrison
- The Way to Bea by Kat Yeh
