SCBWI 2019 Golden Kite and Sid Fleischman Awards
I’ve never heard of the Golden Kite or Sid Fleischman Awards. But after seeing some well-deserved congratulations on Twitter, I had to check it out! The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) annually presents to “recognize excellence in children’s literature.” The categories include Young Reader and
Authors and illustrators in the children’s literature field judge the Golden Kite and the Sid Fleischman Award (exemplary writing for children in the genre of humor). In addition, the Golden Kite was the first children’s award judged by peers. This was a fabulous list of titles and you’ve got to take some time to check out the honor books as well. There are some titles I haven’t seen yet that intrigue me!
- Picture Book Text: Jessie Oliveros – The Remember Balloons
- Picture Book Illustration: Becca Stadtlander – Made By Hand: A Crafts Sampler
- Middle Grade Fiction: Susan Hood – Lifeboat 12
- Non-Fiction for Young Readers: Barb Rosenstock – Otis and Will Discover the Deep
- Young Adult Fiction: Jane Yolen – Mapping the Bones
- Non-Fiction for Older Readers: Elizabeth Partridge – Boots on the Ground: American’s War In Vietnam
The Sid Fleischman Award goes to Angela Dominguez for Stella Diaz Has Something to Say. I gifted Stella to a friend’s daughter for Christmas. I love Angela’s picture book, so I’m excited to give this title a try.
