#blogbookaday: I Really Want to See You, Grandma
Summary:
“Yumi and her grandmother have the same great idea: They want to see each other. So they each head out to do just that, only to completely miss each other along the way! No problem—they’ll just head back home and wait for the other to return. The trouble is that they have the same great idea—again—resulting in the ultimate missed connection! Will this duo ever find each other? Leave it to bestselling author-illustrator Taro Gomi to spin an action-packed story that sweetly, and humorously, celebrates the powerful grandparent-child bond.” (Taken from Goodreads)
Review:
Yumi and her grandmother do not live close, but both decide to see each other on the same day. When Yumi arrives at Grandma’s house and Grandma arrives at Yumi’s house they figured out they missed each other! This happens a few more times as they travel by train, bus, truck, taxi, scooter and bicycle before they finally meet right between their homes at a special tree.
Personal Reaction:
This is a sweet story of a little girl and her relationship with her grandmother. I love that they travel back and forth just trying to reach each other and the modes of transportation they use. Taro Gomi’s illustrations are absolutely adorable as the color pink follows the little girl and her grandmother throughout the story through their clothes, cars and more. A perfect story for Grandparent’s Day to share together!

This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!

This was a big hit in storytime! I read it with a “going places” theme.

It was perfect for a mixed age storytime! Plus it went great with a math message about problem-solving. I asked the kiddos what Yumi and Grandma could have done to solve their problem (they suggested waiting in one place or calling ahead), and then I reminded the grown-ups that math is more than counting. 🙂
