#blogbookaday: Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets – A Muslim Book of Shapes
Summary:
“From a crescent moon to a square garden to an octagonal fountain, this breathtaking picture book celebrates the shapes–and traditions–of the Muslim world. Sure to inspire questions and observations about world religions and cultures, Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets is equally at home in a classroom reading circle and on a parent’s lap being read to a child.” (Taken from Goodreads)
Review:
Using traditions in the Muslim world, this book introduces children to shapes both common and uncommon like squares and triangles, but also octagons and crescent moons.
Personal Reaction:
I really liked this introduction to Muslim religion and culture in such an accessible format as a book about shapes. Hena Khan is also the author of Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book of Colors which is just as well done. I liked the introduction of familiar shapes as well as shapes that are not often seen in shape books for young kids. I also loved the color palette created by Mehrdokht – rich, vibrant jewel tones are absolutely gorgeous on the page. This is a must-share book!

This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
