#blogbookaday: Joy
Summary:
“Fern’s Nanna has not been herself of late. And when Mum remarks that all the joy seems to have gone out of her life, Fern decides to fetch the joy back. With her catching-kit at the ready, she goes to the park and finds joy in all sorts of unusual places. Whooooshh!
But Fern soon realises that joy doesn’t fit in a bag, or a box or a tin! How will she manage to bring some back to Nanna?
Emotional, funny and uplifting, this beautiful picture book has a strong message about empathy and maintaining loving relationships with our grandparents. Guaranteed to bring a bit of joy into every reader’s life, this story is a pure delight.” (Taken from Goodreads)
Review:
Fern’s grandmother is getting older and seems to have lost her joy. Fern spends a day trying to catch joy at the park to share with her grandmother and learns that it’s not as easy as she first thought to find joy and catch it. But, when she visits her grandmother she realizes she’s caught joy, just in an unexpected way.
Personal Reaction:
I really enjoyed this story as inter-generational relationships are vitally important to both young children and grandparents. This story is a great way to open up a conversation with children about grandparents who are starting to slow down or maybe not as happy and upbeat as they used to be. Children can learn to share their happiness and look for the smaller moments in the day that are special to share.

This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
