#blogbookaday: Fox & Chick – The Party & Other Stories

Fox & Chick - The PartySummary:

Fox and Chick don’t always agree. But Fox and Chick are always friends. With sly humor and companionable warmth, Sergio Ruzzier deftly captures the adventures of these two seemingly opposite friends. The luminous watercolor images showcased in comic-book panel form will entice emerging readers, while the spare text and airiness of the images make this early chapter book accessible to a picture book audience as well. ” (Taken from Goodreads)

Review:

In three stories the reader learns that Fox and Chick are good friends, they just dont’t always agree. The little chick likes to push Fox’s buttons, but Fox is always patient. In The Party Chick has to use Fox’s bathroom, just not for what he thought… In Good Soup, Fox is gathering vegetables for soup, until Chick points out that foxes normally eat small birds… And in Sit Still Chick wants Fox to paint his portrait, but he can’t sit still, what will Fox do?

Personal Reaction:

I enjoyed the early reader graphic novel story format of this book. It would make a great title to start teaching kids how to read graphic novels – what text bubble to read first, how to read the panels in order, etc. Kids just learning to read would find this easy with a larger font than most graphic novels and very clear direction on what to read next. I’m a huge fan of Sergio Ruzzier’s muted color palette and sweet characters.

#blogbookaday (1)This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
