#blogbookaday: You’re Safe With Me
Summary:
“When the moon rises high and the stars twinkle, it is bedtime for the baby animals of the Indian forest. But tonight, when the skies turn dark and the night grows stormy, the little ones can’t sleep. SWISH-SWISH! CRACK-TRACK! FLASH-SNAP! goes the storm. Only Mama Elephant with her words of wisdom can reassure them, ‘You’re safe with me.'” (Taken from Goodreads)
Review:
Baby Monkey, Loris, Tiger, and Pangolin are nervous as the dark and stormy night unleash thunder, lightning, wind, and rain on the forest. But, Mama Elephant can explain it all and reassure the babies at the same time. Each explanation includes the understanding that everything is interconnected and although the storm is scary – it’s also important.
Personal Reaction:
The illustrations in this beautiful modern day folktale are absolutely breathtaking. And even more so, when you realize that the majority of the work is hand drawn! With the definite feeling of an Indian folktale, the illustrations fit together perfectly – reminiscent of Mehendi or henna. I loved how the quiet, lyrical text brings the story back around to the wisdom of the Mama Elephant as she is able to explain Mother Nature to the babies in a calm and easy to understand way. This is the perfect bedtime story, especially on a dark and stormy night when your little one might not be able to sleep!

This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
