#blogbookaday: Saturday Is Swimming Day
Summary: “Swimming lessons are on Saturdays, and every Saturday one little girl has a stomachache. When she gets to the pool it’s loud, the floor is wet and slippery, and her swim cap is too tight. Her swimming instructor, Mary, says it’s OK to sit by the edge if she doesn’t want to get in the water this week. The next Saturday the girl has a stomachache again, but with Mary’s gentle encouragement, she eventually manages to make it into the pool to practice her kicks. Little by little, the girl’s confidence grows — until one Saturday comes around when she has no stomachache at all! In a charming and relatable story about trying something new, author-illustrator Hyewon Yum shows that sometimes a little bravery and a lot of patience are all you need to face your fear.” (Taken from Goodreads)
Review: A little girl is nervous about her swimming lessons and every Saturday gets a stomachache. Her instructor, Mary, doesn’t push the little girl but encourages her to get in the pool when she is comfortable. Slowly the little girl becomes more comfortable and excited to be at swimming lessons as she tries something new each week!
Personal Reaction: I loved how well Mary was able to read the little girl’s nervousness and gave her the time to get comfortable before jumping in, literally! After reading this story, I thought it would pair so perfectly with Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwell as the perfect introduction to the pool for the summer or to teach kids that being brave and facing your fear can lead to a lot of fun!

This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
